Eight CONNECTIONS

The pop-up expo CONNECTIONS explores how different people in 2024 have been touched by the First World War. Jelle Vermeersch visited the WW1 museums and collections in Flanders Fields and asked the question: what touches us about this story in 2024? Each participant was allowed to choose one object that touches them from a WW1 collection. In photos and videos, Jelle Vermeersch recorded this process of emotional connection between the various participants and the story of the First World War.

More than a century ago, the guns fell silent in Flanders Fields. This was when the First World War became 'history'. The numerous trenches, craters, cemeteries and monuments criss-crossing our fields and villages remain a tangible reminder of this 'Great War'. As are the many objects bequeathed to us and which have found a home in the various WW1 museums in Flanders Fields.

Again and again, this First World War speaks to us, today and tomorrow, touching us and making us think. In the hope that we will learn something about the world of yesterday and today, about each other and about what drives us to conflict again.

From the story of Gabriel who was raised in Flanders Fields nearly a century ago to the account of Oleksii & Polina, stranded in Nieuwpoort after fleeing the war in Ukraine. About Jim & Georgina who were looking for information about his British grandfather and who found a home in Westouter, and Dutch cyclist Belle De Gast who soaked up the landscape on her bike. Arnold, Mieke and Remi, three generations immersed in history together. From the scientific eye of Belgian German Thomas, the historical wonder of battlefield guide Kim to the impressive testimony of Belgian-Rwandan Laura.

Each have been touched in some way by an object from the First World War.
