Description

From a New Zealand Maori warrior who blesses a memorial garden in the company of the rising sun to the funeral of a soldier from the First World War who is actually laid to rest a century later in the presence of his grieving family. Each one is a striking image that effortlessly breathes life into a story. Photographer Eric Compernolle always succeeds in capturing the soul of the moment in a unique way. Discover in his photographic reference work how, after more than a hundred years, the Westhoek still refuses to forget the horror and consequences of the Great War.

Photography is my way of speaking through images. I do not just capture what I see but I try to feel what is happening during small and big events. Now and then, the combination of talent and pure coincidence results in a photo that tells the story in an almost poetical way. An unnoticed moment often conceals a remarkable feeling. It is such a joy to capture that very emotion. From intimate reburials to public memorial services, photographs are a reminder of moments that might otherwise fade. Photographs offer casual attendees, but also – and especially – those feeling a deep personal connection – the unique opportunity to relive such remarkable moments, ensuring that these will be remembered forever. - Eric Compernolle
