Jeremy Gordon-Smith – the man behind Ivan Bawtree’s photographic archive

Jeremy Gordon-Smith is a distant cousin of British photographer Ivan Bawtree, who documented the Westhoek shortly after the First World War. For many years, he has been passionately preserving and managing Bawtree’s remarkable photographic archive. Together with historian and author Aline Sax, he contributed to the exhibition 1919 at Talbot House, where Bawtree’s unique photographs offer a moving glimpse into the devastated battlefields and the lives of those rebuilding the region after the war.

On 13 November 2026, we are delighted to welcome Jeremy Gordon-Smith to Talbot House for a lecture in which he will share his personal connection to Bawtree’s archive and the stories behind these remarkable historical photographs.
